Serving up a Royally Great Party

We catch up with Emma, who frequently works for some of Off to Work's most historic clients.

Is there anything more quintessentially British than a garden party? Good weather is rare for us and as soon as the sun peaks his head out of the clouds, we all don our shorts and rush outside to crank up the barbeque and pop open the Pimms. Even the Queen enjoys a good garden party in the summer time, although, it must be said that hers are ever so slightly more sophisticated than ours.

Off to Work support some amazing events in venues with years of rich history, such as the Royal Garden Parties, Epsom Downs Racecourse and Stoneleigh Abbey. This week, we managed to catch up with our lovely team member Emma who frequently works for some of our highest profile clients.

Emma joined us in October 2016 when she moved from sunny South Africa to the UK. As a qualified Occupational Therapist, Emma is enjoying her gap year and is keeping herself busy by representing us in venues around London and Berkshire. Some of her favourite clients are Coworth Park, Ascot Racecourse and Reading Football Club.

“I love working with Off to Work” Emma explains. “It’s such an awesome job because it just feels like I’m having fun. It’s opened a lot of doors for me and I’ve experienced a whole host of UK venues that I probably wouldn’t have had the opportunity to visit on my own. I’ve also made some really close friends, which is lovely.”

“I didn’t get to shake her Majesty’s hand, but I had to pinch myself when I looked up and saw her right in front of me!”

“My favourite part about Off to Work is the efficiency. Logging into the website makes it easy for me to keep up to date with my shifts and the new app means I have my entire schedule in the palm of my hand. Booking shifts in advance is also a huge advantage for me, as I’m definitely someone who likes to plan time for holidays and trips!”

Emma has worked for several our top-class clients already. “One of my favourite venues to work with Off to Work is the Director’s suite at Reading Football Club. I get to work with a fantastic team there and I am very comfortable with the pattern of the shifts. Another favourite is Ascot Race Course and I always work in the boxes where I make great tips!”

Of course, we wanted to hear all about Emma’s once in a lifetime experience working at The Royal Garden Party. “The party has definitely been the highlight of my Off to Work career – so far!  All my colleagues were so impressed that I was going to ‘meet the Queen’. I didn’t get to shake her hand, but I had to pinch myself when I looked up and saw her right in front of me. It was surreal! At the first party, she was wearing her pink dress and at the second she was dressed in a lovely lemon one. She looked great!”

Of course, such prestigious events take a huge amount of careful planning. “Months and months of preparation all come down to two hours of service. I had to be careful and polite at all times. We also stuck to a very precise schedule and everything was planned down to the minute. It is always interesting to be able to see what happens behind the scenes at events like this one! With 7000+ guests at the first party and 8000+ at the second, we served a whopping 27,000 cups of tea along with platters of cakes and sandwiches.”

Emma is looking forward to working further shifts with Off to Work and we are very lucky to have such a superstar as part of our team!
